We believe in having a social consciousness and strive to give back to our local communities by increasing education availability, promoting health services and collaborating towards industry research. In a joint venture between Siembra Azul Foundation, The Breslin Learning Center in Philadelphia and Congreso de Latinos Unidos in Philadelphia, we have established a Certificate Program dedicated to teaching English as a Second Language to young immigrants.
Also we act as a link between PUENTES de Salud medical professionals and local business professionals working to provide immigrants with medical services otherwise currently unavailable. Puentes de Salud promotes health and well-being of Laitino immigrants in Philadelphia through access to high-quality clinical care services, innovative education opportunities and participation in peer-to-peer health programs. We believe these services are necessary to each growing community in our area.
But we want to impact the Tequila community as well. Whether it is increasing industry and consumer awareness, from the Tequila process to changes made to the USA - Mexico Tequila trade agreement, or working along side renown Universities that collaborate in industry research such as, investigating local migration trends of Jimadores in Mexico or investigating current historical texts that alter the industry history, Siembra Azul Foundation serves as a connection tool for all industry individuals.
Recently, Siembra Azul Foundation sponsored and led a delegation to San Mateo Ozoloco, Puebla and Mexico City to learn more about the health, education and cultural issues that Mexican immigrants are facing. San Mateo Ozolco, Puebla is the rural community from which many of the Philadelphia’s Mexican immigrants have migrated. The Foundation chose to focus on these three critical areas because they are urgent issues in Philadelphia’s Mexican community as well as important in the lives of residents in San Mateo. Included in the delegation were Dr. Steven Larson MD of PUENTES de Salud, Ms. Nora Litz representing El Viaje community arts project and David Suro-Piñera of Siembra Azul Foundation, amoung others. The visit also provided an opportunity to meet with the First Lady of Mexico, Mrs. Margarita Zavala. Mrs. Lisa Nutter, First Lady of Philadelphia and president of Philadelphia Academies, Inc., opened the discussion about Philadelphia’s city-wide goals and activities in the areas of education, health, and community arts. Observations from our visit to San Mateo were also shared. The hope is to continue this discussion in order to develop some long-term activities that will address these issues in San Mateo and the Mexican community in Philadelphia. Through coordination with friends, colleagues and Mexican government officials, the Foundation was able to prepare this successful trip in June of this year. The Foundation, the people of San Mateo Ozolco, and all those involved in the trip to Mexico look forward to the future outcomes of this wonderful project.
